Montessori's traditional Thanksgivingmeal

Novemberbrought themesof harvest andgratitude toMontessori asweprepared
our annualThanksgivingFeastwhichconnectedanumberof cross-curricular
lessons, includingpractical life skills,math, science, and language. Students
gaineda richunderstanding throughactivities that incorporated the ideasof
peace, gratitude, andcourtesy.
Ourbotany lessonson theplant lifecyclebecamecomplete ina real, concrete
way, asweharvested thecornweplanted inourgarden last spring. Apractical life
exercise to strengthenhandswas to tweeze thecornkernels from theharvested
cornanduse thekernels indifferentways, suchas counting, creating sound
cylinders, andmakingadelicious recipe.
Eachclasswasassignedadish toprepare
and share forour school-wide feast. From
homemadebutter to stuffing, everything
wasmade in theclassroomswith the
students. Studentsgaineda special
appreciation for thebountyof theharvest
season throughcooking, and they felt
pride in theirfinisheddish, enthusiastic
andeager to share theproductof their
laborswith theirpeers.
