Engineering studentsget toknoweachother

Principlesof Engineeringclassbenefit
fromhands-onexperiences, teamwork,
project-based instruction, andpeer
reviewsas theyexplorebasicproblem
solvingand introductoryengineering
concepts. Juniorsandseniorskickedoff
theschool yearby learningabout the
engineeringdesignprocess: define the
problem, research, brainstorm, analyze,
constructaprototype, test/evaluate,
communicate, redesign.
Engineeringdesign isnotastep-
by-stepprocess; it sometimesgoes
backand forthandmayevenskip
steps.Thefirstday, thestudentshad
threeminutes tocreateanametag to
represent their individuality.​Theclass
agreed that theirwork thatdaywasnot
thebest that theycoulddo, andbegan
redesign!
Thestudentshad todefine theproblem
byansweringaseriesofquestions.
Theobjectivewas tonotonlycreate
anametag, but to incorporate their
personality, tastes, hobbies, etc.
Theclassbrainstormedpossible
solutions inpairs—eachstudent chose
thebest solution, analyzed, andcreated
aprototype.Thegirls thenevaluated
andcommunicated theirdesignwitha
shortpresentation to theclass.
Studentsalsoparticipated inanational
cybersecurity forensiccompetition
andarecurrentlyusing theentire
engineeringdesignprocess tosolve
realworldproblemsbydesigninga
concept foramobilephoneapp.
