Thekindergartenand7thgrade
studentshaveonceagainengaged
inacross-curricular studyof the life
cycleofbutterflies.Withexceptional
creativityand instruction, teachers
DianaMaskell andNiccaLebeda, and
GreenCoordinatorNicoleCapitumino,
have teamedup forhands-on science,
literacy, andart lessonswithNardin’s
own, recentlyhatchedcaterpillars.
Students learnedabouthabitatsand
biomes in theclassroomand inour
learninggarden,matchingparticular
animalsandplants to their respective
environments, and the seventh
graders constructed real habitats for
thebutterflies.
Over severalweeks, thegroup
observed themetamorphosisof the
insects.With thehelpof theolder
students, kindergarteners identified
the lifecycleof acaterpillar as it
becomesabutterfly, usingdrypasta.
After further activities, includinga
discussionofdiet, the seventhgraders
readand rewroteEricCarle’s famous
TheVeryHungryCaterpillar
,making the
belovedbook scientificallyaccurate.
A trip to theButterflyConservancy in
NiagaraFalls, Canadacompleted this
project-based learningexperience
for thecaterpillarsandbutterfliesof
NardinElementary!
