Spring2016
For years,Nardinhasdedicateda
day to science; and, likemost school
traditions, ithasevolved.The result
wasScienceDaze, a student-organized
competition ledby thehigh school’s
ScienceClub,which tookplaceon
February25.
“Wewanted todevelop student
leadership, confidence, teamwork,
organizational skills, and time-
management,”saidphysics teacher
AnneCasper.“Thisproved tobea
great forum for that.”
Modeledafter theScienceOlympiad,
ScienceDaze isdirected toward
attitudinal changes toward science:
that it is collaborative, not just
oneperson is responsible for an
experimentorproject, but all people
cancontribute.Therefore, each
studentparticipatesby selectinga
project thatmatches their individual
interestsand signsup to joina team
that is focusedonacommongoal: to
win thecompetition.
TheScienceClub,whichwas
comprisedofmore than60 students
thisyear, beganplanningScienceDaze
at theirfirstmeeting inSeptember.
Theyare responsible fordesigning
twelve“events”orprojectsonwhich
studentswillwork, calculating time
toperform thechallenge, considering
specific skillsandgrade levels,
takingnecessary safetyprecautions,
collectingcompetitionmaterials,
andestablishingguidelines for
presentationand judging.
“Sincewewere trying toencompass
all aspectsof STEAM,we let students
signup fordifferent themes for their
projects, suchasengineering, coding,
biology, astronomy, etc.,”saidScience
ClubPresident EmilyMason.
MissCasper askshigh school science
teachers toassist indevelopinga
rubric tocalculateaquantitative
grade, but theday isentirely student-
run.
“Our threeScienceClubofficersare
each responsible foroverseeing four
events. It isan ideal occasion for them
to superviseagroupof theirpeers,”
addedCasper.
“Thevarietyof theevents showcases
Nardos’amazing talentsandabilities.
Most importantly, thisday is incredibly
positive, likeaproton,”addedScience
ClubVicePresidentMadelineUtz.
Scores for the individual eventsare
combined todetermine the top-
scoringhomeroom, proving that
ScienceDaze is clearlyacollaborative
effort.
